ABOUT THE PROJECT

In our lecture we present LIFE~BOAT, an artistic research project on boats and utopia. It addresses diverse topics through things related to cruising and boating throughout cultural history. It explores our relationship to and obsession with boats and the sea questioning boats as enlarged versions of our own bodies, and metaphors for longings and projections where dreams and nightmares fuse into each other and provide telling examples of social and political hierarchies. A main interest is to reposition art objects as documents of cultural memory in museums in ways that question dominant Western hierarchies and discourses, but also offer new aesthetic experiences for the audience.
